Friendship Day is Coming!
Hey class!
It's really nice to see everyone wishing each other a Happy Chinese New Year on the tag board. :)
I think it was Ashikin who mentioned that our blog looks boring without photographs... Since Friendship Day aka "Valentine's Day" is coming up, the topic for this week is to post a photograph of yourself and your friends on this blog! :) I HOPE TO SEE NEW PEOPLE POSTING!!! It's okay if not all the people in the picture are from our class, just make sure they will be fine with their picture being on our blog before you post. Also, please do not post offensive pictures that will get our blog flamed!
The photograph that best represents "friendship" gets a prize! So as not to jam up our entire blog, please do not post more than three photographs per person, and keep your photo size SMALL or MEDIUM. I know I haven't given the post-of-the-week prize out yet... I will do so tomorrow. Please take good care of your motivational posters and remember to bring supplies to complete them in Lifeskills next week. Remember, best poster gets a prize too! :)
All the best with remaining block tests! In the meantime, here are some photographs of me and my friends...

My goals for 2009 is also to do well for my 'O' levels. My aim is to go to a good polytecnic and sign up for either an aviation or marine engineering course. Even though I know that i have to work very hard to reach my goals, I will try my best to reach my goals by studying hard in class and to do my homework. I have to improve greatly in my humanities and sciences as i got a grade of 4 in my 'N' levels, not forgeting about both my english and maths. I also have to make a time-table to balance out my worklife, persona stuff and my schoold stuff.
I wish everone the best of luck
Happy Chinese New Year

My Goals For 2009
My goals for 2009 is to do well in the 'o' level examinations and to enter into a good polytechnic... The way to achieve my goal is through revision and by paying full attention in class. Another goal of mine is that i must follow my time-table to manage my time between homework and own revision. Even tough, i have planned my time-table, i find it very difficult to follow. Hence, this would be one of my goal . Finally, i wish i would get enough points in my 'o' level examinations to get into my favourite course, child psychology which is available in ngee ann polytechnic. I hope i will achieve my goals in this year. I wish everyone in 5A all the best in their future endeavours... Aim High...Last but not least, i wish all my chinese classmates a very fun-filled happy chinese new year
Enjoy the long weekend....Vaisha

Jack's Post
What are my goals for 2009 and after graduation? My goals for 2009 is to pass my GCE 'O' LEVEL with flying colours if not to the best i can do.
I can achieve my goal by studying hard when is study time and do not waste any free time i have. Most importantly, i cannot keep on studying, it will make myself mad and admit to IMH. ): so i need so relaxing time.I must plan the time well for myself. A study time table will be good! (:
I MUST GO TO POLYTECHNIC!Another goal for myself is not to disappoint my mother and do well in all exam and i must change to a better person. I CAN DO IT because i have changed! but not to the best!
What i can do during relaxing time?
- Gym
- Swimming
- Slack with friends
- Read books about taoist prayer
- Listening to songs
My Goals after graduation is that i am going to find a part time job or continue learning taoist priest thing from my master. I'm also going to prepare myself for NS by having healthy diet and excercise 3 times a week to keep myself slim and fit. I'm going to NS once i get my O level results!
Anyway, wish me good luck please ! i am going to take my theory and practical at BBDC for my car license in 4 months time. haha. **Anybody interested in buying any health plan or savings plan or invest in anything, please tell me also. I'm helping my friend at great eastern with this also. Surely, it will benefit you when you are old. trust me. I,myself bought a savings plan! thanks thanks. Loves,Jack
my answer to Miss Ruby Question.before that, poor Miss Ruby, didn't know who spelt it wrongly. hahas.anyway, my goals for 2009 is to get veri good grades for my O level, and get into the courses i want. after i graduate, i will want to pick up new skills eg, guitar and singing and of course working. during the holidays before i really start study life again.=))alright take care!!! do homework. i haven't even finish mine. got to go bye.zhongping.
NEW Question of the week
Given that the "song problem" has been resolved by our incredibly efficient blog rep... I am going to propose a NEW question of the week:
What are your goals for 2009 and after graduation?
Best response to this Q wins a prize on Friday Jan 23! Please post on the blog itself, it's easier to read.
Thanks a million vice-chair for the photos! Zi Hui looks so "productive" trying to "help out" in the last picture. Oh yeah, we should post a picture of the completed decorations! :) Can I also point out that someone spelt SECONDARY school wrongly in the CNY Hamper card... I was mocked mercilessly in the staff room because of this. Sob!
Study groups are a great idea - let me know your plans.
:)

Lifeskills Next Week
Hello hello to all the folks who said hello on the tagboard! Do post on the blog ITSELF as well, now that you all have the userid & password. If you have lost it, ask your friends in the class committee.
So, how did people find the "line game" we played this week? I learnt a little bit more about our class, but I'll bet there were people who didn't answer with complete honesty. E.g. The question about boyfriends and girlfriends. Ha! Thanks to those who had the courage to take a step forward, especially for the more sensitive questions.
For lifeskills next week, I'd like everyone to think about their goals for 2009, and also to think about what they would like to change about themselves this year. We will do actual target setting on paper in week 4, so I'd like us to start thinking in that direction. In your free time, surf JC/ polytechnic/ private school websites, find out about courses you might be interested in, and start planning NOW. Please do not wait till you receive your GCE 'O' level results before deciding where to go, based on the options given to you. You will regret not having had a clear goal and working towards that goal. Also, there will be a PRIZE for the top in English & overall top student for the first block test. Strive hard everyone! :)
Not many people responded to my question on what "A" in 5A should stand for - I am personally a fan of 5 ASPIRE. Maybe we can take a vote in lifeskills next week before we change the name of our blog URL.
:)

Vaisha's Post
Hi 5a, we just witnessed the release of 'o' level results today and soon,it will be our turn to recieve the 'o' level results. It is definately a big jump from 'n' level to 'o' level. However, we can do it if all of us put in 100% effort. Always remember that miss ruby is expecting 100% polytechnic admission from us and we must not disappoint her. So from now onwards, lets pay full attention in all classes and attend all structured remedial classes which are planned for us. We will be able to do it with perserverance. So 5a, LETS PERSERVERE TILL THE END TOGETHER... Let me the first person to wish all of you good luck and best wishes for the journey we are
going to take to succeed together. The victory shall be ours. Go 5a...

I read the news today, oh boy...
Thanks to all who have been posting on the blog - encouraging messages, public apologies, what next? Declarations of love? ;) It's very nice to see this positive spirit here. Keep it up! To be fair, I have authorized Fariq to give out the userid and password to everyone in class so you can all post on the blog. Zhong Ping & Jack can give out the information as well. I will also give out the userid and password in class on Monday.
Anyway, I am posting on a Saturday morning because I finally had time to read the paper today, and it broke my heart to read, on page 11 of World News, about what is happening in the Gaza strip in the Middle East. The headline says "One in Three Who Die in Gaza War Are Children," and there is the saddest photograph next to it. In the article, you can read about 10 boys who continue to play soccer despite the shelling from bombs around them, because they are used to it. Can you imagine living in a place like this?
Of note in Home news is a very small article about the Chinatown murder that happened a few days ago, in which an 18-year-old boy was beaten to death by 4 strangers over a staring incident. The strangers turned out to be 4 young men aged 19 to 21, and if convicted, they face the death penalty. Isn't it ridiculous? To lose your life over something like this? It's very sad to see young people throwing away their lives because of a moment of folly.
There's also a Saturday Special on how young graduates find it difficult to get jobs all over the world, thanks to the ongoing economic recession. Hopefully when you all graduate from tertiary education, the world economy will be in a better place.
So much bad news on a Saturday morning! But really my point is this - this weekend, count your blessings. That you live in a peaceful country. That you have loved ones around you. That you have the chance to go to school. That you have the chance to achieve your dreams this year. That you are alive!
Have a good weekend! Remember to post on what you think the "A" in 5A should stand for, or you can respond to this post as well.
:)

HELLO 5a'09 ! We have come so far till the final stage of our secondary education. Please do not waste the effort and time you put in for the past 4 years in GSS!. I'm sure you put in the effort, hardwork & time is because you want to pursue your 'O' level and get to polytechnic! Don't waste it!
Let's help each other if we got any problems regardless of schoolwork or any other problems.
Please unite as one ! We are sec5, let us make ourselves proud with any good ways. For example, decorate the class for CNY and be the top.
Always remember this :
ATTITUDE = 100 !!
HARDWORK = SUCCESS !!
The time, effort and hardwork will always pays off at the end. No worries at all friends.
Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.
PS : Anyway, to those hokkien and taoist or buddist people, if any of your friends or family need priest for funeral prayers or god prayers, you can contact me and i will help you arrange. No worries. : )

What does the "A" in 5A stand for?
Hello, class of 5A 2009!
The main reason why I would prefer for us not to be known as 5NA is because the acronym "NA" usually stands for "Not Applicable." For example, if I were filling out a form, and the form asked me to put down the number of children I have, I could write "NA," because I have no children. To my mind, "NA" doesn't sound like a very positive acronym. It would be very sad if we were the class of 5 "Not Applicable."
It's very important that we pick a good word to stand for who we are. As Mr. Rozells mentioned at assembly this morning, books are weapons, and WORDS HAVE POWER. What we call ourselves will shape what we believe about ourselves and what we achieve.
So in the comments section, I'd like you to post what you think the "A" in 5A should stand for, and give one or two reasons why you like this word. Please pick a positive and uplifting word that will give us strength throughout this year!
Some suggestions from me: A for Aspire? Attitude? Amazing? Awesome? All-stars? Arrived? Achievement?
Post your comment on this blog or on the tagboard by Friday January 16. The best comment for the week will win a prize! If you don't know how to post on a blog, ask a friend for help!
:)

Ground Rules
Welcome to our class blog! :)
A couple of ground rules I would like everyone to observe:
1) As usual, RESPECT your friends and teachers when posting on this blog. You are writing in a public domain and your comments can easily be copied, pasted, emailed and used against you. So think carefully before you post.
2) Take RESPONSIBILITY for your comments. Make sure you include your name at the end of every comment you post.
3) As far as possible, write in standard English. As your English teacher I will be posting English-related topics on this blog, on top of posts related to class or Lifeskills matters. Please try to keep SMS/ chat language to a minimum. Emoticons like this :-) are acceptable. Chat spelling & acronyms e.g. "Aniwae, see u l8tr!" are NOT acceptable.
If you can think of any more ground rules we should observe on this blog, or in class, post a comment here. If not, have fun blogging!
:)
